Lineage is of much importance in Jiu Jitsu! Unlike most traditional martial arts that go back hundreds or thousands of years, where it would be impossible to trace a gym’s pedigree (without the help of a professional historian!), Jiu Jitsu is a much more modern discipline. This means that a direct line should be easy to verify back to the start (usually a Gracie) to ensure your instructor has the credentials they claim to. If you ever want to do a cursory check on a program just ask the coach who their blackbelt is and you should get a clear and immediate answer!
